Stationary Charging Station Design for Sustainable Urban Rail Systems: A Case Study at Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., China

Abstract: In 2014, more than 43 cities in China were racing to construct their urban rail systems (including metro and light rail systems), recognizing that an urban rail system will be a good solution to the tough problems that they are faced with, including traffic congestion and PM2.5 air pollution. On 22 August 2012, the first electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) energy storage-type rail vehicle in the world was unveiled at Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., China. The EDLC rail system has been considered a promisin… Show more

“…The concentration of population in urban regions creates increasing pressures on urban and regional traffic systems [3]. As a rapid and efficient form of transportation, rail transit (i.e., metro rail and light rail) played a significant role in alleviating traffic congestion and promoting sustainable development of urban traffic system [4][5][6][7].…”

“…More recently, a new generation of electric traction rail traffic systems has been developed . The new rail vehicle is only powered by onboard supercapacitor energy storage necessitating neither overhead wires nor third rails supplying energy, unlike existing urban rail systems.…”

“…However, in order to retain their environmental advantages over other transportation modes in urban areas, significant improvements in the energy efficiency of urban rail systems have to be further achieved [3].…”

“…In recent years, much attention of the control and energy community has been paid to both the design of stationary charging stations [3], [6], [7], [8] and energy management of onboard ESSs [9], [10]. This interest can only grow in the foreseeable future, for the energy-storage urban rails have been considered a strong contender for the next generation of urban public transportation systems.…”
