Statins are associated with reduced likelihood of sarcopenia in a sample of heart failure outpatients: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background Sarcopenia is prevalent in heart failure (HF) patients, contributing to its poor prognosis. Statin use is postulated as a probable risk for developing sarcopenia, but little is known regarding this association in HF patients. This work aims at classifying and characterising sarcopenia and at describing the association of statin use with sarcopenia in a sample of Portuguese HF outpatients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a sample o… Show more

“…12 However, other studies showed that statins effectively reduced some degree of muscle mass atrophy and prevented sarcopenia development. 17,18,38 In the present study, patients administered statins showed higher muscle mass at admission and discharge than those who were not. Nevertheless, the limited duration of the observational period, which spanned only a few months, might have precluded the identification of changes in skeletal muscle mass.…”

“…However, evidence regarding the effects of statins on muscle health in patients with sarcopenia is lacking. Evidence suggests that statin use is not associated with inferior muscle parameter values in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, 17 decreases the incidence of sarcopenia in patients with heart failure 18 and chronic kidney disease, 19 and, in part, has beneficial effects on muscle health. These studies did not consider the presence or absence of sarcopenia, and there are no reports on statin effects in patients with sarcopenia.…”

“…A systematic review and meta-analysis showed that sarcopenia and heart failure often co-exist, and the prevalence estimates of sarcopenia vary between 10 and 69% in patients with heart failure [ 31 ]. Both sarcopenia and heart failure share common pathophysiological pathways involving muscle dysfunction, which include alterations in mitochondrial density and activity, fiber distribution, and oxidative stress [ 32 ]. However, previous studies haven't focused on particular type of heart failure [ 33 ].…”
