Statin combined with exercise training is more effective to improve functional status in dyslipidemic older adults

Abstract: Statins combined with exercise training or exercise alone are more effective to improve functional status, to manage cholesterol levels and overall cardiovascular risk factors in dyslipidemic older adults with comorbidities than ST alone. Furthermore, current results suggest that isolated statin therapy decreases functional status and other cardiovascular risk factors.

“…Despite the widespread use of other lipid-lowering drugs, such as targeted drug therapy for Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9), the morbidity and mortality associated with AS remain high (Schmidt et al, 2017). Current evidence supports the superiority of the combination of exercise and drug therapy over single-drug therapy (Baptista et al, 2018;Gui et al, 2017). Baptista et al demonstrated that the combination of statin and exercise improved dyslipidemia and reduced cardiovascular risk in older adults (Baptista et al, 2018).…”

Baptista et al demonstrated that the combination of statin and exercise improved dyslipidemia and reduced cardiovascular risk in older adults (Baptista et al, 2018). However, the International Lipid Expert Panel (ILEP) recently suggested that athletes taking statins are at risk of developing myopathy as well as elevated creatine kinase (CK) (Katsiki et al, 2020).…”

“…These include beneficial effects of physical activity on cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and weight [ 41 ]. While both physical activity and medication adherence demonstrate great benefits in preventing CVD conditions, research has demonstrated that combining statin medication with physical activity can reduce CVD mortality risk more than statin or physical activity alone [ 27 , 29 , 42 , 43 ]. Research has shown that interventions focusing on increasing one positive health behavior may lead to increased levels of engagement in other positive health behaviors [ 44 ].…”
