The old technology [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] deconvolution stands for [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] domain prediction filtering. Early versions of it are known to create signal leakage during their application. There have been recent papers in geophysical publications comparing [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] deconvolution results with the new technologies being proposed. These comparisons will be most effective if the best existing [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] deconvolution algorithms are used. This paper describes common [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] deconvolution algorithms and studies signal leakage occurring during their application on simple models, which will hopefully provide a benchmark for the readers in choosing [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] algorithms for comparison. The [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] deconvolution algorithms can be classified by their use of data which lead to transient or transient-free matrices and hence windowed or nonwindowed autocorrelations, respectively. They can also be classified by the direction they are predicting: forward design and apply; forward design and apply followed by backward design and apply; forward design and apply followed by application of a conjugated forward filter in the backward direction; and simultaneously forward and backward design and apply, which is known as noncausal filter design. All of the algorithm types mentioned above are tested, and the results of their analysis are provided in this paper on noise free and noisy synthetic data sets: a single dipping event, a single dipping event with a simple amplitude variation with offset, and three dipping events. Finally, the results of applying the selected algorithms on field data are provided.

For economic and efficiency reasons, blended acquisition of seismic data is becoming increasingly commonplace. Seismic deblending methods are computationally demanding and normally consist of multiple processing steps. Furthermore, the process of selecting parameters is not always trivial. Machine-learning-based processing has the potential to significantly reduce processing time and to change the way seismic deblending is carried out. We have developed a data-driven deep-learning-based method for fast and efficient seismic deblending. The blended data are sorted from the common-source to the common-channel domain to transform the character of the blending noise from coherent events to incoherent contributions. A convolutional neural network is designed according to the special characteristics of seismic data and performs deblending with results comparable to those obtained with conventional industry deblending algorithms. To ensure authenticity, the blending was performed numerically and only field seismic data were used, including more than 20,000 training examples. After training and validating the network, seismic deblending can be performed in near real time. Experiments also indicate that the initial signal-to-noise ratio is the major factor controlling the quality of the final deblended result. The network is also demonstrated to be robust and adaptive by using the trained model to first deblend a new data set from a different geologic area with a slightly different delay time setting and second to deblend shots with blending noise in the top part of the record.

The conventional Radon transform suffers from a lack of resolution when data kinematics and amplitudes differ from those of the Radon basis functions. Also, a limited aperture of data, missing traces, aliasing, a finite number of scanned ray parameters, noise, residual statics, and amplitude variations with offset (AVO) reduce the de-correlation power of the Radon basis functions. Posing Radon transform estimation as an inverse problem by searching for a sparse model that fits the data improves the performance of the algorithm. However, due to averaging along the offset axis, the conventional Radon transform cannot preserve AVO. Accordingly, we modify the Radon basis functions by extending the model domain along the offset direction. Extending the model space helps in fitting data; however, computing the offset-extended Radon transform is an under-determined and ill-posed problem. To alleviate this shortcoming, we add model domain sparsity and smoothing constraints to yield a stable solution. We develop an algorithm using offset-extended Radon basis functions with sparsity promoting in offset-stacked Radon images in conjunction with a smoothing restriction along the offset axis. As the inverted model is sparse and fits the data, muting common-offset Radon panels based on ray-parameter/curvature is sufficient for separating primaries from multiples. We successfully apply the algorithm to suppress multiples in the presence of strong AVO on synthetic data and a real data example from the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi Canyon. The results show that extending the Radon model space is necessary for improving the separation and suppression of the multiples in the presence of strong AVO.
