Static strength of the shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams: Regulations and research analysis

Abstract: The paper reviews the most important analytic expressions, on the basis of the developed industrial countries' contemporary literature, for determination of strength of shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams. The mechanism of possible failure and basic criteria used for defining of the shear connecter strength at composite slabs and composite slabs with profiled sheet. Special analysis has been done in the expressions and recommendations given by Eurocode 4 in the area of shear connecter strength, … Show more

“…In this study, the composite beam is composed by an HEB160 steel beam connected to a concrete slab of dimensions (36×32×12 cm 3 ) reinforced by 4 rebars of 8 mm in diameter so 4Φ8 in both directions, as shown in Fig. (2). The connection is made up by means of an IPE120 shear connector.…”

“…The used concrete mixes are listed in Tab. (2). In order to avoid the disparity of concrete compressive strength from one slab to another, the slabs of all the push-out specimens were cast vertically; the friction effect at the steel-concrete interface was eliminated by oiling the steel flanges before casting the slabs.…”

“…As a consequence, the analysis of composite structures is complex and requires the nonlinear analysis and appropriate computer software [5][6][7][8][9][10]. However, in order to simplify the design, contemporary design codes, such as Eurocode 4 [11] (EC4), are still mainly based on linear-elastic analysis with some modifications in order to take into account the present nonlinearities [4,11,12].…”
