Static hydraulic urethral sphincter for treatment of urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence in 11 dogs

Abstract: Static hydraulic urethral sphincter was frequently associated with minor complications but no major complications (i.e. those requiring further surgery). Continence scores were significantly improved compared with those before surgery, with the possibility of further improvement following inflation of the sphincter.

“…This finding supports clinical observations that some USMI cases treated with AUSs will require greater cuff inflation volumes than others to reach continence, with some cases becoming continent following AUS placement without any additional inflation, while others necessitate repeated deflations or removal (Delisser et al . , Reeves et al . , Gomes et al .…”

“…Furthermore, the option exists to, postoperatively or at any time in the future, treat persistent incontinence or recurrence of incontinence by increasing the pressure around the urethra by inflating the occluder percutaneously (Reeves and others 2009, Delisser and others 2012). …”

“…AUSs have been used successfully in female and male dogs to treat refractory incontinence (Delisser and others 2012, Currao and others 2013, Reeves and others 2013, Bowlt and others 2015). This case report demonstrates the successful use of an AUS in a cat that had profound incontinence presumed due to USMI associated with genitourinary dysplasia.…”

“…The initial pilot study performed on four dogs (Rose and others 2009) reported complete continence in three of the four dogs and improved continence in the fourth case, but subsequent studies have had mixed results (complete continence ranging from 36.4 per cent to 67 per cent) and still involve only relatively small case numbers (Delisser and others 2012, Reeves and others 2013). …”
