A top-down modeling methodology is proposed as a tool to evaluate the composite reliability performance of a bulk power system. Applications to understanding reliability tradeoffs are examined. Directions for future research are discussed.Index Terms-Composite reliability, Markov processes, system operating states.
NOMENCLATUREThe following notation is used throughout this paper.A System matrix of state transition probabilities.
p ijState transition probability to state i from state j .
u oColumn vector consisting of all zeros except for a one in the appropriate row, indicating the system's initial state.
u ssSteady-state column eigenvector. u t Column eigenvector at time step t.
