State-selective study of the direct double photoionization of the Ne valence shell

Abstract: Cross sections for double photoionization of the Ne L shell into the 2s2p5 3po and I P" and the 2s02p6 I se states were measured for energies from threshold up to 150 eV. using photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Both 2s2p5 channeIs were observed with comparable magnitude in contradienon to a propensity rule based on the Wannier-Peterkop-Rau theory. A comparison of the summed 3po and IP" cross sections with MBPT calculations results in a deviation of 50%.

“…In atomic DPI an almost linear excess energy dependence of the cross section is typical close to threshold if it is supposed that the Wannier threshold law is valid (Wannier 1953, DPI cross section proportional to E 1.056 exc ). Also in atomic DPI the exciting-photon energy dependence close to threshold shows no remarkable step at the threshold energy in some rare gases (Möbus et al 1994, Schartner et al 1993 which is similar to the exciting-photon energy dependence close to threshold seen in figures 3 and 4 for the present molecular case. Besnard et al (1986Besnard et al ( , 1988 presented a similar behaviour of molecular DPI in NO.…”

“…Most recently, DPI has been extensively studied in the outer shell of the rare gases [10 -18], owing to the increased performance of synchrotron radiation (SR) sources. In the measurements of the energy dependence of the branching ratio between double and single photoionization cross sections, considerable attention was given to the threshold [10][11][12] and high energy [13 -15] behaviors of DPI. Some data have also been obtained in the study [16 -18] of the energy and angle-resolved DPI process.…”

“…2), which is clearly observed in the 4p 4 1 D distribution but is very weak in the 3 P and 1 S distributions. Peaks at similar energies do, however, also appear in the electron distributions related to the 4s4p 5 final states (not shown).…”

“…In the distribution for the 1 D state, some sharp peaks are also observed for the 40-42 eV binding-energy range, but detailed analysis suggests that they should be attributed rather to the 3 P state, and appear here due to the imperfect final-state selection. The 4s4p 5 np states have been studied extensively in the spectator Auger decay of the 3d −1 np optical resonances [15,[29][30][31], and approximate positions are indicated in Fig. 4.…”
