“…This -ray detector may operate with high resolution over a wide energy range, with an energy threshold of about 10 keV at room temperature and of about 4 keV at 0 C. At 662 keV, the current resolution is 4.4% FWHM, while the best results obtained in the past at this energy were, to our knowledge: 5.6% FWHM using a PMT [3], 5.5% FWHM employing a Silicon Drift Photodiode Array as photodetector [14], 4.58% FWHM obtained with a CsI(Tl) crystal coupled to a mercuric iodide (HgI ) device [15]. This later value was, however, obtained by a 13-mm-diameter photodetector, with a sensitive area much larger than that of our SDC.…”

“…The maximum quantum efficiency of a PMT is less than 25% and, at the wavelength of the maximum emission of the CsI(Tl) around 565 nm, this value decreases to about 15%, using an S20 photocathode which gives the maximum quantum efficiency at this wavelength. The best energy resolution that may be obtained using a PMT is of Manuscript the order of 5.6% full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) at 662 keV [3], with a threshold of a few keV. Silicon photodiodes (PD) coupled to scintillators offer considerable advantages compared with PMT's.…”
