‘State-of-the-art’ of building integrated photovoltaic products

Abstract: During the last decades, the photovoltaic (PV) modules and their associated architectural materials are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of the building envelope such as facade, roof and skylights in the urban centers. This paper analyzes the-state-of-the-art of the PV elements and construction materials which are advertised as BIPV-products at the most important companies in the world. For this purpose 136 companies and 445 PV elements have been investigated and analyzed from a technical a… Show more

“…Next, the identification of the customization level with regards to the aspect of the BIPV façade for which parametric variation was investigated. In this regard, several other authors suggest that a sub-division of BIPV exists by its constitution, being the elements that make up the modules and the composition that makes up the façade [35,38,39,58,60].…”

“…The last generations of solar cells tend to answer these issues thanks to their higher efficiency. However, their use in the field of Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) [3]- [5] requires the installation of photovoltaic panels not only on the roof, but also on the vertical façades of the residential and office buildings [6], [7]. Indeed, the integration of photovoltaic panels on the building envelope appears to be a relevant solution to produce more electricity, but also to reduce the seasonal mismatch (between the production and the consumption of electricity) [8].…”

“…An example, as following reported, is the fact that until now the documentation available for BiPV products is often strictly limited to elementary datasheets directly imported by conventional PV panels and collecting only basic (mainly electrical) performance and features (e.g. dimensions, weight) (Frontini, 2014, Bizzarri, 2011, Cerón, 2013, Verbene, 2014. As a consequence building requirements and proper analysis of construction interfaces with the building skin, compatibility with building layers and materials, technical details for integration in building technical elements, maintenance instructions, etc.…”
