Witch 3 is a new validator of violation witnesses in the witness format 2.0. Note that our previous tool, Symbiotic-Witch 2, can validate only violation witnesses in the old GraphML format. Witch 3 validates witnesses of reachability of an error function, overflows, and invalid dereferences and deallocations. Similarly to Symbiotic-Witch 2, the tool is based on symbolic execution and uses parts of the Symbiotic framework. Support of the witness format 2.0 in Witch 3 includes features not supported by Symbiotic-Witch 2, such as constraints on the program variables and function return values, specifying statements by column, and providing the concrete statement in which the violation occurs. These additional features can further restrict the explored state space, and, more importantly, allow for much more precise validation.

We release the first tool suite implementing MoXI (Model eXchange Interlingua), an intermediate language for symbolic model checking designed to be an international research-community standard and developed by a widespread collaboration under a National Science Foundation (NSF) CISE Community Research Infrastructure initiative. Although we focus here on hardware verification, the MoXI language is useful for software model checking and verification of infinite-state systems in general. MoXI builds on elements of SMT-LIB 2; it is easy to add new theories and operators. Our contributions include: (1) introducing the first tool suite of automated translators into and out of the new model-checking intermediate language; (2) composing an initial example benchmark set enabling the model-checking research community to build future translations; (3) compiling details for utilizing, extending, and improving upon our tool suite, including usage characteristics and initial performance data. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that compiling SMV-language models through MoXI to perform symbolic model checking with the tools from the last Hardware Model Checking Competition performs competitively with model checking directly via nuXmv.

FM-Weck: Containerized Execution of Formal-Methods Tools

Software is ubiquitous in the digital world, and the correct function of software systems is critical for our society, industry, and infrastructure. While testing and static analysis are long-established techniques in software-development processes, it became widely acknowledged only in the past two decades that formal methods are required for giving guarantees of functional correctness. Both academia and industry worked hard to develop tools for formal verification of software during the past two decades, with the result that many software verifiers are available now (for example, 59 freely available verifiers for C and Java programs). However, most software verifiers are challenging to find, install, and use for both external researchers and potential users. FM-Weck changes this: It provides a fully automatic, zero-configuration container-based setup and execution for more than 50 software verifiers for C and Java. Both the setup requirements and execution parameters of every supported verifier are provided by the tool developers themselves as part of the FM-Tools metadata format that was established recently and was already used by the international competitions SV-COMP and Test-Comp. With our solution FM-Weck, anyone gets fast and easy access to state-of-the-art formal verifiers, no expertise required, fully reproducible.
