State-of-the-art and research challenges for consumer wireless communications at 60 GHz

Abstract: The demand on performance of wireless networks is constantly increasing. To date, conventional sub 6 gigahertz (GHz) bands were able to keep up with the requirements through continuous spectral efficiency improvements. Consequently, advancing this area further became exceptionally costly. Therefore, despite the industry resistance towards changing the already established communications spectrum and unavailability of sufficient number of suitable frequency bands for typical communication purposes, carrier frequ… Show more

“…Initial IEEE mm-wave standards 802.11ad and 802.15.3c were ratified in December 2012 and October 2009, respectively. Furthermore, considering the fact that the first submm-wave standard, IEEE 802.15.3d, was approved in September 2017, it will be safe to say we are at least a decade away from commercial low-THz band products [11][12][13]. Nevertheless, research activities on both circuitry and communication domains are starting to accelerate, which includes MIMO systems as well [14].…”

“…Since WiFi has already been deployed on 60 GHz spectrum, the interference in WiFi system is ought to be considered with the deployment of 5G. The performance of either 5G or WiFi should not be affected by each other in such condition [4–7].…”

“…The high-quality factor in the cavities of the waveguide makes the coupling frequency excellent choice. In the study of [9], investigated that, reconfigurable antenna provides a system with compactness and flexibility. A large number of reconfigurable antennas capable of switching between narrowband.…”

“…In this specific region of the spectrum, the opportunities immediately seen include wireless personal area networks of the next generation [7]. The unlicensed 60 GHz band has appeared as a worldwide short-range wireless process option such as WLAN with a data rate of about 1.5 Gb / s allowing uncompressed video signal transfer between a video player and a TV to be a good choice for roughly 60 GHz unlicensed band application [8,9]. In this frequency band [10], [11], different antenna designs were presented.…”
