Digital twin is widely studied in the context of industry 4.0. It is expected that the application of digital twin in intelligent factory logistics can enrich connectivity, proactivity, and agility of the logistics. Architecture is one of the significant factors impacting on the selection of appropriate enabling technologies for constructing the intelligent logistics. This paper proposes a digital twin architecture for intelligent factory logistics. It mainly includes a physical layer, two cyber layers, and an interface layer. The architecture is in compliance with the architecture of the Human-Cyber-Physical System (HCPS). Moreover, the evolution of the architecture is elaborated during the planning, implement, and operation stages when construction of the digital twin. At the initial stage, human should participate in the decision-making process frequently to determine whether the results given by digital twin need to be changed. However, the data-driven model based digital twin will continually learn the human’s changing behaviors, thus constantly updating itself. It can evolution from digital model, digital shadow to digital twin with the continuous construction process. The ultimate digital twin should be able to assess operational key performance indicators (KPIs) and handle dynamic events.

A newly introduced term in the field of simulating an artificial or physical system is that of the “Digital Twin” concept method. It employs a digital representation and modeling method, capable of expanding and improving the life cycle of complex items, systems, and processes. Nowadays, digital twin technology has become a key research field worldwide. In this context, it is applied and utilized in various fields. One such field is the automotive industry, a technological field that has great implications in users’ everyday life. Digital twin technology not only has great contributions from the initial stages of design until the final construction stages of vehicles, but also during its use, drawing useful information from its daily functions and making the driving experience more enjoyable, comfortable, and safe. It is worth noting that the vehicles that can greatly benefit from the use of digital twins are electric vehicles, which has tended to acquire greater shares in the last decade.

PurposeThis study aims to provide a measurement model, and the underlying constructs and items, for Logistics 4.0 in manufacturing companies. Industry 4.0 technology for logistics processes has been termed Logistics 4.0. Logistics 4.0 and its elements have seen varied conceptualizations in the literature. The literature has mainly focused on conceptual and theoretical studies, which supports the notion that Logistics 4.0 is a relatively young area of research. Refinement of constructs and building consensus perspectives and definitions is necessary for practical and theoretical advances in this area.Design/methodology/approachBased on a detailed literature review and practitioner focus group interviews, items of Logistics 4.0 for manufacturing enterprises were further validated by using a large-scale survey with practicing experts from organizations located in Central Europe, the Northeastern United States of America and Northern Thailand. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to define a measurement model for Logistics 4.0.FindingsBased on 239 responses the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in nine items and three factors for the final Logistics 4.0 measurement model. It combines “the leveraging of increased organizational capabilities” (factor 1) with “the rise of interconnection and material flow transparency” (factor 2) and “the setting up of autonomization in logistics processes” (factor 3).Practical implicationsPractitioners can use the proposed measurement model to assess their current level of maturity regarding the implementation of Logistics 4.0 practices. They can map the current state and derive appropriate implementation plans as well as benchmark against best practices across or between industries based on these metrics.Originality/valueLogistics 4.0 is a relatively young research area, which necessitates greater development through empirical validation. To the best of the authors knowledge, an empirically validated multidimensional construct to measure Logistics 4.0 in manufacturing companies does not exist.
