STATCOM Performance Evaluation Using Operation Data from Digital Fault Recorder

Abstract: Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) are being employed by Dominion Energy to control voltage and enhance system stability. Due to the complexity of the control systems, operational modes, and nonlinearities, it is essential to evaluate STATCOMs' behavior to ensure their correct and proper response to dynamic events such as line faults, generator trip, or load rejection throughout the grid. This procedure brings benefit to device management by identifying potential equipment problems and improve dynamic … Show more

“…These factors collectively influence the efficiency and performance of power transmission systems. Hence, the disparity between the voltage and angle at the transmitter and receiver ends allows for the manipulation of power flow in transmission lines through adjustments in line impedance or voltage angle, as supported by previous studies [6].…”

“…Qr Cj (6) where F represents the total costs (USD/year), C Loss represents the annual cost per unit of power loss (USD/kW/year), C p denotes the total SSSCs purchase and installation cost ($/kVar), Pr Total Loss and Qr Total C stand for the total power loss in line ij, Qr Cj denotes the total reactive power injected at location j, N bus indicates the total number of buses, and N SSSC reflects the optimal number of SSSCs placements. Therefore, the annual total cost of SSSCs can be calculated as:…”
