“…Thereafter, it declined to the minimum of 44.31% removal at Stage III. These results indicated that when the average influent NH4+-N concentration was more than 253.55 mg/L, a high amount of free ammonia (FA) would be generated (Xu et al , 2018), which probably could inhibit the growth of AOB and NOB. It has been previously reported that NOB is more sensitive to FA than AOB (Wang et al , 2017).…”

“…Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) were observed in them [23]. SNAD progresses at low DO levels; laboratory and full-scale SNAD studies have utilized swine waste, its anaerobic digestion liquor, and other wastewaters as landfill leachate and sludge digester liquor, with the DO concentration set at various levels, such as below 0.5 mg/L [24], 0.3 mg/L [25], 0.3-0.5 mg/L [26], <0.2 mg/L [12], and 0.19-0.54 mg/L [13]. A two-year study by Ishimoto et al [14] demonstrated the importance of limiting DO levels below 0.3 mg/L among the DO fluctuations to improve nitrogen removal in the Shizu-1 facility.…”

“…After reviewing all the previous studies, especially those that carry patents, it is noticed that all of them have dealt with and focused on digested water (centrate), this indicates that SSs has not been permanently eliminated. In this study, all SSs lines were eliminated, this has achieved many advantages compared to other studies, as shown in Table 11 (Gonzalez-Martinez et al, 2016;Lackner et al, 2014;Sánchez et al, 2014;van Dongen et al, 2001;Xu et al, 2018).…”

“…On the other hand, the operation of conventional activated sludge process is consisted of mainstream line that represent the wastewater ow throughout the treatment facilities, and sidestreams (SSs) lines that come from the sludge management units (Jia et al, 2020;Vineyard et al, 2021). SSs are the leachate produced from sludge treatment and this leachate is highly polluted compared to mainstream (Xu et al, 2018). They have a high concentration of organic pollutants and nutrients, hence, most of wastewater treatment plants operators consider the returning of SSs to plant wastewater head as one of the main reasons for the deterioration of the conventional activated sludge system.…”
