“…These studies progressed steadily from the 1970 pulsed UWMAK series [15] and TVE-2500 [16], to the 1980 STARFIRE [17] (that first promoted steady-state current drive), to the more advanced 1990s steady-state ARIES series [18]. The 1970s US designs uncovered undesirable aspects of pulsed operation and low power density machines, plasma impurity control problems, and maintainability issues.…”

“…Even though scientific break-even (the point at which the energy produced by a fusion reaction equals the energy used to sustain it) cannot be demonstrated at present, results from on-going physics experiments have induced sufficient confidence to the point of involving large industries and utilities, with government support, to commit large sums of money for basic technology development. Designs of demonstration and commercial reactor concepts have been studied and reported 10-16, and engineering related efforts of second generation designs are continuing as represented by STARFIRE 17 . More interests have been generated recently in developing and building hardware for fusion power reactors, by either extrapolating the technologies from existing experimental devices, or by designing, conducting experiments, and establishing modules that would simulate the requirements of a power reactor.…”
