Star formation efficiency along the radio jet in Centaurus A

Abstract: NGC 5128 (also known as Centaurus A) is the most nearby powerful AGN, widely studied at all wavelengths. Molecular gas has been found in the halo at a distance of ∼20 kpc from the galaxy center, associated with H  shells, through CO line detection at SEST (Charmandaris et al. 2000, A&A, 356, L1). The molecular gas lies inside some IR and UV bright star-forming filaments that have recently been observed in the direction of the radio jets. These archival data from GALEX (FUV) and Herschel (IR) show that there i… Show more

“…We find a similar situation in many blue compact dwarfs, which show recent clustered star formation even in very isolated locations after a long period of quiescence (Fuse et al 2012). We also mention the possibility of "jet-induced star formation" that has been discussed, for example to explain the existence of a young stellar population near Centaurus A at a galactocentric distance of 15 kpc (Mould et al 2000;Santoro et al 2016;Salomé et al 2016). In that case the age of SH2 would indicate the epoch of the last nuclear activity in NGC1316.…”

“…Given the upper limit from the [S ii]λ6717/λ6731 line ratio, we chose an intermediate value of 40 cm −3 for the gas electron density. The metallicity is assumed to be solar, close to the value found by Salomé et al (2016) across the entire outer filament (∼0.8 Z ).…”

“…Further study by Salomé et al (2016) has suggested that, in other locations the interaction with the jet is quenching the star formation instead. Coincident with the H i cloud, they detected three unresolved CO clouds that, probably due to the kinetic energy of the AGN jet, are not gravitationally bound and thus do not form stars efficiently.…”

“…The dashed lines approximately delineate the path of the radio jet (Morganti et al 1999); the arrow shows the flow direction of the jet. of kinetic energy by the jet (Salomé et al 2016a). The Balmer decrement (Hα/Hβ) across the MUSE fields confirms that the ionised gas is dusty.…”
