Star formation and jet-induced coronal lines near the core of NGC 1068

Abstract: Context. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are very luminous galaxies from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far infrared (FIR). To study regions near the core, which are dominated by dust, IR is the perfect spectral range because of the lower optical depth of the dust. However, these galaxies are usually distant, and the structures near the core are faint compared to the central source. High resolution and high contrast are mandatory to study the inner structures of AGNs and better understand the interaction between th… Show more

“…While indirect evidence has been found in this object, thereby corroborating the unified model (Antonucci & Miller 1985;Raban et al 2009), many unknowns remain as to the nature and distribution of the obscuring material (Nenkova et al 2002). Recently, the complexity of the circumnuclear environment has been revealed by high angular resolution broad band observations in the near-IR (Rouan et al 2004;Gratadour et al 2006;Exposito et al 2011). In this Letter, we present the new elements introduced by polarimetry.…”

“…6), though it is consistent with the error of ∼10% in the flux calibration, it could indicate that the stellar extinction is slightly overestimated -and consequently result in an underestimation of the temperature. Previous studies that used the same method in NIR spectra (e.g., Rodríguez-Ardila et al 2005b;Riffel et al 2009cRiffel et al , 2010 or broad-band SED modeling (e.g., Marco & Alloin 1998;Kishimoto et al 2007;Exposito et al 2011) found temperatures of 1000 K in Type-1 AGN and 800 K in Type-2s. From JHK spectroscopy, Landt et al (2011) also found temperatures ranging from 1100 to ∼1700 K for a sample of 23 Type-1 sources.…”

“…This makes NGC 1068 an optimal target to investigate the morphology and kinematics of the different components in the AGN central regions: the infrared-emitting molecular gas, the X-ray obscuring torus, and the ionized gas (e.g., Exposito et al 2011;Krips et al 2011;Storchi-Bergmann et al 2012).…”
