Staphylococcus aureus eye infections in two Indian hospitals: emergence of ST772 as a major clone

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study was to perform molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates causing a variety of eye infections from two major eye care hospitals in India.MethodsTwenty-four isolates from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India, and nine isolates from LV Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar, India, representing severe to nonsevere eye infections like microbial keratitis to lacrimal sac abscess, were characterized. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec typing, multilocus sequence typ… Show more

“…Also the highly transmissible ST772-MRSA-V/t4867 (the Bengal clone) (Afroz et al, 2008) which has been detected in different countries (Fuentes et al, 2005; Nadig et al, 2012; Shore et al, 2014) including Kuwait (Boswihi et al, 2016). However, this is the first time qac C and reduced susceptibility to chlorhexidine has been identified in this infectious clone.…”

“…This lead us to perform whole genome sequencing of 7 isolates of ST772 from different clinical backgrounds and one isolate of ST672 [16], [17], [22], [24]. By identifying the SCC mec regions from whole genome sequences, we have shown that ST772 and ST672 SCC mec elements have novel rearrangements compared to extant type V elements.…”

“…However, in contrast, CA-MRSA isolates from India are genetically diverse and nearly three-fourths are PVL-positive. These belong to two ST types: ST22 and ST772 [16][18]. While ST22 originated in England, ST772 is present mainly in India, Bangladesh and Malaysia, and has been called the Bengal Bay clone by some investigators [16], [19], [20].…”
