Staphylococcus aureus CC30 Lineage and Absence of sed,j,r-Harboring Plasmid Predict Embolism in Infective Endocarditis

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus induces severe infective endocarditis (IE) where embolic complications are a major cause of death. Risk factors for embolism have been reported such as a younger age or larger IE vegetations, while methicillin resistance conferred by the mecA gene appeared as a protective factor. It is unclear, however, whether embolism is influenced by other S. aureus characteristics such as clonal complex (CC) or virulence pattern. We examined clinical and microbiological predictors of embolism in a pro… Show more

“…One possible explanation was that methicillin resistance conferred by the mecA gene altered the functional surface expression of fibrinogen and fibronectin adhesins. Furthermore, the specific clonal complex, CC30, and absence of the plasmid‐borne enterotoxin‐encoding genes, sed , sej , and ser , were strongly associated with embolism 31 …”

“…Representative isolates from France were selected from the collection of the French National Reference Centre for Staphylococcus, Lyon, France, and previously typed using DNA array hybridization [ 19 , 20 ]. Eight representative CC were chosen and CC subtype clusters totalling >25% of the CC size were labelled ‘successful’, whereas examples totalling <25% were labelled ‘sporadic’.…”

“…ST30 has been reported in several studies in different countries as a major clonal complex with a significant impact on human health worldwide. One US study described it as having a higher physical condition in bloodstream infections, which may have an impact on its ability to cause embolisms [ 47 , 48 ]. It has also been identified, alongside ST5, as one of the main types associated with community-acquired MRSA infections in Argentina [ 49 ].…”
