Staphylococcal aureus Enterotoxin C and Enterotoxin-Like L Associated with Post-partum Mastitis

Abstract: Denmark is a low prevalence country with regard to methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In 2008 and 2014, two neonatal wards in the Copenhagen area experienced outbreaks with a typical community acquired MRSA belonging to the same spa type and sequence type (t015:ST45) and both were PVL and ACME negative. In outbreak 1, the isolates harbored SCCmec IVa and in outbreak 2 SCCmec V. The clinical presentation differed between the two outbreaks, as none of five MRSA positive mothers in outbreak 1 had… Show more

“…This gene occurs at rates ranging from 23.6 to 50% (21). Franck et al (26) showed that mastitis in human females is also associated with the sec and sell genes, which are located in pathogenicity islands and are potentially transferred from cows to humans. For this reason, we conducted molecular characteristic analyses of the virulence potential of staphylococcal isolates from cow's milk to study mastitis in cows associated with S. aureus in Russia.…”

“…There are some reports of SEC also being involved in human post-partum mastitis. [35]. Contaminated ruminant milk can also provide an entry-point for S. aureus or its toxins into the food-chain.…”

“…All isolates are tested by multiplex PCR for the presence of genes encoding staphylococcal protein A (spa), mecA, CC398 (sau1-hsd), staphylococcal complement inhibitor (scn), and lukF-PV (DANMAP, 2017). Except for the lukF-PV encoding gene, isolates are not routinely examined for the presence of other virulence genes such as enterotoxins and exfoliative toxins (Franck et al, 2017).…”
