Staphylinids (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) of Ukrainian metropolises

Abstract: During hundreds of years, in large cities man has been forming a specific urban environment with original species composition of insect communities, including the most diverse group of predatory beetles – Staphylinidae family. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro are the three most populated cities of Ukraine. In the urban cenoses of these cities, over 140 species from 66 genera of Staphylinidae have been recorded. The total of 69 species (43 genera) were recorded in Kyiv, 67 (39 genera) in Dnipro and 66 (37 genera) in Khark… Show more

“…Detailed descriptions of the conditions of the study areas are given in articles of some authors (Gritsan et al, 2019;Baranovski et al, 2020Baranovski et al, , 2021Gorban et al, 2021). The invertebrate fauna of these territories was also described earlier (Komlyk & Brygadyrenko, 2019b;Puchkov et al, 2020;Kunakh et al, 2021) A brief description of the studied habitats is given in Table 1. The method for determining the mineralisation and pH of soil solution is also described in some articles (Komlyk & Brygadyrenko, 2019a.…”

“…The practical importance of ground beetles is that they regulate the number of invertebrates, including agricultural pests. At the same time, some species of Carabidae are phytophages and mixophytophages and cause great damage to agricultural and forest plants (Avtaeva et al, 2019Puchkov et al, 2020;Brygadyrenko et al, 2021).…”

“…Depending on the developed conditions, the decrease in the number of harmful insects occurs under various factors. At the same time, certain groups of entomophages act as leading agents, limiting the pest abundance at different levels (Kryzhanovskij 1983;Puchkov et al 2020). During the periods with a low number of plant-eating insects, the activity of multifeeding predators acquires significant importance, and in the case of a further increase in the number of phytophages, the leading role is played by specialized species of entomophages (Kotze et al 2011).…”
