Stapes malformations: the contribute of the endoscopy for diagnosis and surgery

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the contribute of the endoscopic exclusive transcanalar approach for the management of stapes malformations. A retrospective chart review was made at our tertiary referral centers. 17 patients with stapes malformations underwent surgery with endoscopic exclusive transcanal approach. A complete audiological and radiological assessment before and after surgery was performed. 12/17 (70 %) underwent a surgical endoscopic correction, In case of fixed platina underwent five en… Show more

“…Of the 160 articles identified in the primary search strategy, 135 were excluded due to non‐English language (n = 5), individuals under 18 years (n = 1), and studies completely unrelated to endoscopic stapes surgery (n = 140). After the above screening process, the total number of articles qualified for review was 14 (Table ) . Four of these were level III, and 10 were level IV evidence.…”

“…In one study reviewing endoscopic stapedioplasty in comparison to stapedectomy, cases of stapedioplasty were removed from the analysis . Additionally, where mixed adult and pediatric cases (<16 years old) were included, the pediatric group was excluded from our pooled analysis . In total, a pooled patient population of 314 adults was eligible for analysis with respect to published outcomes of endoscopic stapes surgery.…”

“…For a successful ossiculoplasty, the correct placement of the prosthesis is essential so as to maximize the acoustic benefit . The center of the mass of the prosthesis should be perpendicular to the stapes footplate for the resultant vector to be in line with the direction of sound transmission.…”

“…8 For a successful ossiculoplasty, the correct placement of the prosthesis is essential so as to maximize the acoustic benefit. 9 The center of the mass of the prosthesis should be perpendicular to the stapes footplate for the resultant vector to be in line with the direction of sound transmission. This is better achieved when the prosthesis is placed at the precise location for the effective transmission of the acoustic forces, and this is possible when the working area can be visualized clearly, as in the endoscopic technique.…”

“…Primary indications for endoscopic ear surgery include cholesteatoma removal and myringoplasty [7,8]. And application of endoscopic ear surgery gradually expands to stapes surgery, middle ear tumors or retrocochlear lesions [9,10] ( Table 1).…”
