Standards, Security and Business Models: Key Challenges for the IoT Scenario

Abstract: The number of physical objects connected to the Internet constantly grows and a common thought says the IoT scenario will change the way we live and work. Since IoT technologies have the potential to be pervasive in almost every aspect of a human life, in this paper, we deeply analyze the IoT scenario. First, we describe IoT in simple terms and then we investigate what current technologies can achieve. Our analysis shows four major issues that may limit the use of IoT (i.e., interoperability, security, privacy… Show more

“…Whilst this may increase profit margins and decrease the reaction time to market changes, the lack of segmentation allows for transversal network attacks. The third one is due to the number of off-the-shelf equipment being set up in the network [8]. By including off-the-shelf hardware, the attack surface increases, and introduce other potentially weak links (i.e.…”

“…Similarly, IoT Operating Systems (OS) are detailed and compared [24,30]. Bujari [26] considers current challenges including interoperability, security, privacy, and business models. Security challenges are studied [124,44,7] and Alaba [7] surveys existing security solutions.…”

“…The growing popularity of the IoT devices with significant computational power, the ubiquitous access to Internet connectivity and a huge quantity of low-cost sensors opens the door to a wide range of new applications [ 41 ]. In this perspective, it is therefore possible measuring the real impact of noise pollution through low-cost devices and microphones introducing a cheap, but powerful Wireless sensor network (WSN) platform that is readily available and widely deployed.…”
