Standardized voluntary force measurement in a lower extremity rehabilitation robot

Abstract: Background: Isometric force measurements in the lower extremity are widely used in rehabilitation of subjects with neurological movement disorders (NMD) because walking ability has been shown to be related to muscle strength. Therefore muscle strength measurements can be used to monitor and control the effects of training programs. A new method to assess isometric muscle force was implemented in the driven gait orthosis (DGO) Lokomat. To evaluate the capabilities of this new measurement method, inter-and intra… Show more

“…All control subjects walked at a treadmill speed of 0.5 m/s. Subjects then underwent testing of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) using isometric strength testing in the Lokomat (Bolliger et al 2008). Three trials were performed to calculate an average hip flexor maximum voluntary force.…”

“…Previously, the Lokomat has been used to assess voluntary muscle force and spasticity in the lower limbs [23,24]. We used 2 different assessments to track lower limb proprioception at the hip and knee joint in able-bodied subjects and in 1 subject with incomplete SCI.…”

“…When B is set to zero, no force is applied (null field). The specific resistance level was scaled to 10% of each individual's hip flexor maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), as measured by the Lokomat's force transducers (Bolliger et al 2008) and the average angular velocity during the swing phase of baseline walking.…”
