RÉSUMÉ La présente enquête avait pour objectif d'évaluer le niveau de connaissances, les attitudes et pratiques vis-à-vis des précautions standard (PS) parmi le personnel soignant duABSTRACT This survey aims at assessing knowledge, attitudes and practices towards standard precautions (SP) among caregivers at Hassan II University Teaching Hospital in Fes. This is a cross-sectional prospective and evaluative study that covers a two-month period. Data were collected using an anonymous and selfadministered questionnaire. Sampling population was divided into 307 nurses (53.8%), 210 hospital doctors (36.77%) and 57 support staff (9.45%), belonging to other various categories working in different departments. This is a young population since 79.7% are under 30 years old. The results have shown that only 28.72% of health care professionals had received training in SP. Moreover, 87.7% claimed to practice hands' hygiene while moving from one patient to another. In contrast, 75.7% emphasized the need to change gloves each time they work on a new patient. However, individual protection measures were rarely mentioned in several risky situations.

Transdermal microneedles have captured the attention of researchers in relation to a variety of applications, and silicone-based moulds required to produce these systems are now widely available and can be readily manufactured on the lab bench. There is however some concern over the potential for accidental needlestick injuries and, as with any sharp hazard, the potential for blood-borne pathogen transmission must be considered. This follows from recent governmental concerns over the use of microneedle systems in dermabrasion. Despite the piercing nature of the microneedle patch sharing many similarities with conventional hypodermic needles, there are notable factors that mitigate the risk of contamination. A range of microneedle systems has been prepared using micromoulding techniques, and their puncture capability assessed. A critical assessment of the potential for accidental puncture and the control measures needed to ensure safe utilisation of the patch systems is presented.

AimsTo compare blood transmission through nitrile, single and double layer latex glove materials in simulated needlestick injuries. MethodsExperiments involved nitrile, single and double layer latex gloves. A cutting suture needle was dipped into a specimen of blood and then immediately jabbed through the glove material into a cell containing saline. This process was repeated using the same blood specimen with different glove materials, plus a control experiment with no glove material. Other factors, including the angle, speed and depth of needle penetration, were controlled through the use of a testing machine. Following needle punctures, samples were taken from the suspension contained in each cell and examined under blind conditions. Median red blood cell (RBC) count was used as a measure of the quantities of blood transmitted through the different gloves. ResultsNitrile glove material was associated with reduced transmission of RBCs compared to single layer latex. Double layer latex gloves provided better protection than single layer latex or nitrile gloves.Conclusions These findings suggest that in protecting against blood transmission in the context of needlestick injuries, single layer nitrile gloves are superior to single layer latex gloves, but double gloving with latex gloves provides better protection than either single layer latex or nitrile.
