Several major companies have chosen SIP for implementing presence and instant messaging applications. This is the major motivation behind developing lnstant Messaging and Resence (lMul&p) protocol based on SIP. SIMPLE woking group of IETF has been developing a standard ptocol for instant messaging and presence based on SIP. With the advent of the SIMPLE p m m l there is also a need to develop a standard set of APIs (Application Rograrmnins Merface) to enable application d e v e l o p impleman insram mesaghg and pmence (lM&P) applications on top of miS protocol.
