Standard pulse oximeters can be used to monitor respiratory rate

Abstract: Background: One of the most important limitations of standard pulse oximeters is the inability to detect changes in respiratory rate until oxygenation is affected. This study sought to determine if analysis of the plethysmogram by wavelet transforms would enable the determination of changes in respiratory rate at an earlier stage. Methods: Ten healthy adult volunteers were monitored, breathing at baseline and predetermined respiratory rates, using a standard pulse oximeter. Photo-plethysmograms captured in an … Show more

“…Care needs to be taken to avoid skin burning on sensitive and neonatal skin (12 There have been studies indicating that respiration rate can be extracted from plethysmograms. Plethysmograms from ten healthy adults were processed using wavelet transforms (21). Respiration waveform was observed in the plots of the wavelet transforms.…”

“…The blood volume pulse that can be recorded using this setup may be used to calculate several important parameters for early noninvasive cardiovascular diagnostics. Respiratory parameters can also be deduced from the BVP at an earlier stage if the analysis of the BVP can be done using wavelet transforms (Leonard et al 2003). Monitoring of respiratory rate is currently performed by either using capnography or other methods which either requires trained personnel or expensive equipment.…”

“…7,8,11,14,18,21,22 With the recent introduction of new techniques using estimation of time-frequency spectra for analyzing nonstationary signals, several studies have utilized short-time Fourier transform (STFT) 24,25 and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) 1,8,[16][17][18] to extract the respiratory rate from the PPG signals. However, success is predicated on obtaining the highest possible time and frequency resolution, which is impossible with either the STFT or the CWT.…”
