Standard classification and pathophysiology of rosacea: The 2017 update by the National Rosacea Society Expert Committee

Abstract: In 2002, the National Rosacea Society assembled an expert committee to develop the first standard classification of rosacea. This original classification was intended to be updated as scientific knowledge and clinical experience increased. Over the last 15 years, significant new insights into rosacea's pathogenesis and pathophysiology have emerged, and the disorder is now widely addressed in clinical practice. “…Skin from healthy patients was acquired following plastic surgery ( n = 12). The clinical diagnosis of rosacea subtypes was performed on the basis of the classification system of the National Rosacea Society . For immunohistochemistry, 31 skin biopsies from diagnosed patients with different rosacea subtypes, namely ETR ( n = 8), PPR ( n = 8), PhR ( n = 7), and healthy skin ( n = 8) were detected.…”

“…Prior classification of rosacea proposed four subtypes of rosacea: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular . However, given the inaccuracies and shortcomings of subtyping and recommendations for its elimination, this should be replaced by phenotypes based on recommendations by National Rosacea Society 2017 and ROSCO 2017 . Rosacea is thought to be caused by dysregulation of innate immunity .…”
