Standard Biocompatibility Studies Do Not Predict All Effects of PVA/CMC Anti-Adhesive Gel in vivo

Abstract: Purpose: PVA/CMC (polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose) hydrogel fulfills various physiochemical properties required for an adhesion barrier and has shown good anti-adhesion properties in previous in vivo studies. In this investigation, we assessed the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of PVA/CMC gel and compared this to the functionality and promotion of wound healing for two surgical indications. Methods: Standardized ISO10993 in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility studies, comprising cytotoxicity, g… Show more

“…Therefore, this could be a method easily applicable during production, financially undemanding, and leading to the obtaining of materials with significant added value after confirming improved antibacterial properties and screening out implant toxicity with the mentioned surface modification by our other research. Also, research on the change in the antiadhesive properties of the material after treatment with the solgel method could provide interesting results [46,[100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111].…”

“…Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has the formula [CH 2 CH(OH)] n . PVA is a water-soluble, semi-crystalline polymer that has excellent thermal stability, physical properties, and biocompatibility and is inexpensive [ 113 , 114 ]. PVA has a strong oxygen barrier due to strong hydrogen bonds, but the presence of hydroxyl groups makes it very susceptible to moisture, causing swelling and dissolving.…”

“…Wound healing is one of the most complex and dynamic processes in the human body, involving homeostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and the remodeling of skin tissue [ 1 ]. However, wound healing is easily affected and delayed in patients with diabetes mellitus and complicated systematic health conditions [ 2 , 3 ]. In addition, delays to wound healing significantly increase the risk of wound infection, which results in immune responses, tissue inflammation, and damage.…”
