Standard- and large-sized eggs of Trichuris trichiura in the feces of schoolchildren in the Yangon Region, Myanmar: Morphological and molecular analyses

Seungwan Ryoo,
Bong-Kwang Jung,
Sooji Hong
et al.

Abstract: Standard- and large-sized eggs of Trichuris trichiura were found in the feces of schoolchildren in Yangon, Myanmar during epidemiological surveys and mass deworming with albendazole in 2017-2019. The standard-sized eggs were identified as those of T. trichiura, but it was necessary to exclude the possibility of the large-sized eggs belonging to Trichuris vulpis, a dog whipworm. We conducted morphological and molecular studies to determine the species of the 2 types of Trichuris eggs. Individual eggs of both si… Show more

“…The normal egg is shown in Figure 1, while the dead eggs (Figs. 2 and 3) were eggs with losing and melting embryos, wrinkling and lysis of embryo, and lysis of the membrane cell ( Ryoo et al ., 2023 ). It is also described that infective eggs become shorter and wider with shorter and wider plugs and the shell is thinner.…”

“…However, it should be noted that there are 2 different groups of T. trichiura eggs, i.e., standard- and large-sized groups, with the large-sized eggs being up to 65–88 μm in length [ 44 ]. In addition, T. trichiura eggs may become enlarged in aged female worms, and after treatment with anthelmintic drugs, such as mebendazole or albendazole [ 45 , 46 ]. Therefore, the egg size alone is not a good criterion for determining Trichuris spp., and molecular studies are recommended [ 11 , 41 ].…”

“…In Korea, hydatid cysts have never been discovered in archaeological human remains. However, hydatid cysts of E. granulosus have been found frequently in Europe [ 39 , 135 ], the USA [ 46 ], the Middle East (Israel) [ 46 , 125 ], and Egypt [ 46 ]. In Europe, calcified hydatid cysts have been found in archaeological human remains; about 25 cases from 18 different sites dating from Hellenistic to post-medieval periods [ 135 ].…”
