Cette étude sur la reproduction sociale de la famille et la transmission du patrimoine dans les familles de l’élite athénienne, pendant la deuxième moitié du xix e et les premières décennies du xx e siècle, se forme autour de quatre familles. Les deux premières familles sont des familles philhellènes installées à Athènes suite à la Révolution Grecque, soit une famille italienne de l’avocat Giuseppe Chiappe et une famille allemande du médecin-chirurgien Heinrich Treiber. La troisième est la famille du propriétaire foncier Michalis Patousas et enfin, la famille du pharmacien Christos Smyrniotopoulos. Ces familles ont des usages différenciés de la dot qui selon les contrats de dot dépouillés chez le notaire Dimitrios Vouzikis et le Bureau des Hypothèques d’Athènes, et contrairement à ce que les études suggéraient pour le début du xix e siècle, une fois sur deux concerne une maison ou un terrain à bâtir, deux fois sur trois elle comporte de l’argent liquide et presque toujours le trousseau. Dans les deux premiers cas des familles philhellènes, le contrat dotal rencontre la ferme volonté familiale d’organiser l’ensemble du processus de transmission intergénérationnelle ; dans le deuxième cas, la dot s’impose au père de la mariée comme instrument d’une union qu’il técuse; dans le cas du pharmacien, elle permet non pas d’organiser tout le processus de transmission mais d’assurer au moins la succession à la tête de l’officine en installant le gendre. Cette variété de pratiques dotales est aussi le reflet de la variété des acteurs et des configurations familiales. Pourtant, notre étude montre que déjà au dernier quart du xix e siècle, les coutumes locales des différentes régions se sont homogénéisées dans la capitale.
