“…Bentham (1876) separated the genus Salvia into 12 sections based on stamen variation, which remains until now the most widely accepted treatment (Briquet 1897;Stibal 1934Stibal , 1935Epling 1938Epling , 1939Pobedimova 1954;Hruby 1962). The evolution of the stamen connective and unique lever mechanism has occurred parallel in the Old World and the New World (Claßen-Bockhoff et al 2004;Walker and Sytsma 2007).
