In response to the tragically high incidence and negative consequences of female-directed violence in intimate relationships, a large literature has been dedicated to the investigation of the proximate and the ultimate or evolutionary predictors of men's partner-directed violence. Evolutionary psychology offers a framework for investigating the design of evolved information-processing mechanisms that motivate costly behaviors such as men's partner-directed violence. We review several forms of men's partner-directed violence, including insults, sexual coercion, physical violence, and homicide, from an evolutionary psychological perspective and with a particular focus on the adaptive problem of paternity uncertainty. The problem of paternity uncertainty is hypothesized to have selected for the emotion of male sexual jealousy, which in turn motivates men's nonviolent and violent mate retention behaviors. We review empirical evidence for the relationships among paternity uncertainty, male sexual jealousy, and men's partner-directed violence. We propose that a comprehensive understanding of men's partner-directed violence will be achieved only by careful consideration of both proximate and ultimate causes.

Resumen En el Perú, la discrepancia en las cifras oficiales sobre feminicidios -variable que ha incluido solo feminicidios y no tentativas pese a la delgada línea que los separa en términos de la intencionalidad del victimario-ha llevado a una lectura incorrecta y parcial del fenómeno. Para superar este problema, construimos la variable feminicidio agregado (sumatoria de feminicidios y tentativas), e identificamos su aumento constante y a ritmo creciente en el tiempo. Sobre esa base, el objetivo de este artículo fue estudiar los determinantes macrosociales del feminicidio agregado. En base a un modelo econométrico de datos de panel (2009-2013), obtuvimos evidencia sobre una asociación más fuerte entre feminicidio agregado y factores protectivos (educación, autonomía económica y accesibilidad a servicios de salud) que entre feminicidio agregado y factores de riesgo (violencia física). Las implicancias de política apuntan a la necesidad de desarrollar indicadores macrosociales para mejorar la focalización y efectividad de las políticas públicas en feminicidios y violencia contra la mujer.Palabras clave: América Latina, feminicidio, género, homicidio, violencia. AbstractThe discrepancy in official statistics regarding feminicide in Peru -a variable that has included only feminicide and not attempted feminicide, in spite of the thin line that divides them in terms of the aggressor's intentionality-has led to an incorrect and partial reading of this phenomenon. To overcome this problem, we built the variable aggregated feminicide (the sum of feminicide and attempted feminicide) and found it has been growing constantly and at increasing rates over time. On this basis, the objective of this paper was to study the macrosocial determinants of aggregated feminicide. Using a panel data econometric model (2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013), we obtained evidence of a stronger association between aggregated feminicide and protective factors (education, economic autonomy, and accessibility to health establishments) than between aggregated feminicide and risk factors (physical violence). The policy implications point to the need for developing macrosocial indicators to improve the focalization and effectiveness of public policy regarding feminicide and violence against women.
