The academic support service provided by the library is critical to the attainment of the University’s central mission of teaching, research and service. This paper contributes to the quest for appropriate approaches for the training and development of academic librarians to ensure that the important role assigned to the library is fulfilled. It discusses schemes available in Ghana for equipping academic librarians with the requisite training and skills to enable them to fulfil their roles efficiently and effectively. In the process, a number of important issues such as training needs assessment and responsibility for training receive attention. Recommendations are made for more structured, consistent and systematic training and development programmes for academic librarians in Ghana.

Purpose This study aims to highlight the issues and concerns specific to information professionals (IPs) in academic libraries of Pakistan. It identifies the problems that academic libraries face in attracting and hiring competent IPs along with the strategies to be used to recruit and retain them in the dynamic environment of academia. Moreover, it provides a list of required skills that employers would look for while hiring IPs in academic settings. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews of 20 library leaders involved in hiring process were conducted from 16 public and private sector universities. Findings Findings identified interpersonal skills as the most desired followed by the subject knowledge and IT orientation while hiring IPs for the present and foreseeable future. Good salary package, conducive work environment with opportunities for learning and continuing professional development and speedy promotion were significant perceived factors to attract and retain the talented professionals in university library settings. Practical implications The study would be helpful for policymakers and administrators to hire and retain the IPs capable of developing user-centered services in academic libraries. Originality/value Practical suggestions made for hiring, retaining and developing IPs in academic libraries would be beneficial for other developing countries with similar context. It addressed an unexplored area in the context of a developing country and reported original research that will assist policy and decision-makers to hire and retain competent human resources.

The study utilized the questionnaire instrument to collect and analyze data to determine the state of staff development of Library Assistants in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. All Library Assistants were taken through staff orientation and on the job training. They also received instruction in user/reader services. Over 89% of the Library Assistants were satisfied with the in-service training given. Only 29% of them had enjoyed study leave with pay, while over 55% were desirous to be granted study leave to pursue further studies in Library and Information related programmes. It was revealed that most Library Assistants did not have the opportunity to participate in seminars, workshops, Library Association Meetings and Conferences. Recommendations have therefore been given to correct these anomalies.
