Stable region for maxillary dental cast superimposition in adults, studied with the aid of stable miniscrews

Abstract: The medial 2/3 of the third rugae and the regional palatal vault dorsal to it is a stable region to register 3D digital models for evaluation of orthodontic tooth movement in adult patients.

“…Various techniques have been proposed so far for superimposing 3D digital casts 3–5 . Two studies in non-growing patients that used miniscrews as a gold standard superimposition reference suggested the medial part of the third rugae and a small region dorsal to it as a stable superimposition reference 3, 4 .…”

“…In a study, the maxillary digital models were superimposed on stable miniscrews in extraction patients, and it was stated that the palatal rugae region is stable and could be included for alignment to evaluate orthodontic tooth movements. 28,29 This area was found to be stable throughout a person's lifetime and also has been used for establishing identity in forensics. 15 The validity of this method was evaluated in extraction patients 22 and even in patients treated with orthopedic appliances such as rapid maxillary expansion and maxillary protraction headgear.…”

“…25,26 In previous studies, pretreatment and posttreatment maxillary digital dental casts were superimposed to analyze tooth movement patterns in extraction patients. 16,17 In this study, similar methods were used to superimpose and analyze the T1 and T3 scans.…”

“…The junction of the incisive papilla and the palatine raphe served as the origin (0, 0, 0), resulting in an x-, y-, and z-axis and three planes (Figure 2). 16,17 Three-dimensional model superimposition. To measure orthodontic tooth movement, digital maxillary casts T1 and T3 were registered using the iterative closest point (ICP) method, 18 in which initial rotation and translation scans are estimated using the 3D palatal vault region (PVR).…”
