“…For example, the elemental composition of reef fish otoliths might differ between larvae whose development in MHI waters is burdened by coastal runoffs containing lead, herbicides, and several volcanism-specific elements (Spencer et al 2000, Sansone et al 2002, and larvae experiencing the relatively pristine oceanic environments of NWHI waters. Several accurate and precise techniques such as modern mass spectrometry (Campana et al 2000) exist for quantifying trace element signatures in the tiny otoliths of reef fish settlers.…”

“…However, only a few studies have focused on stable Pb isotopes in biological samples to trace the anthropogenic origins of Pb (Kurkjian and Flegal, 2003). Previous studies have proven that the Pb isotopic composition of biological samples can provide a fingerprint for sources of Pb (Rabinowitz, 1995;Spencer et al, 2000;Manahan, 2000;Kurkjian and Flegal, 2003).…”

“…The original otolith digestion procedure used by Spencer et al [17] using heat lamps to dry down samples was modified to a procedure using microwave digestion. The new procedure allowed for 11 samples and one blank to be digested at a time and the digestion took less time than the previous method.…”

“…Lead isotopes in the microchemistry of otoliths were used by Spencer et al [17] on the basis of the difference in isotope signatures between petrol lead additives that contaminate the sediment and near-sediment water column in Kaneohe Bay, and the ambient near-shore lead isotopes that have naturally dissolved from the basaltic base rock of the island of Oahu, Hawai'i. The success of the lead isotope study in Hawai'i lead us to carry out a similar approach to the problem of site identification central to the management of L. campechanus.…”
