Stable double spacing multiwavelength Brillouin-Erbium doped fiber laser based on highly nonlinear fiber

Abstract: A double frequency spaced multiwavelength Brillouin-Erbium doped fiber laser (BEDFL) with figure of eight cavity have been successfully developed and tested. Double frequency spacing is achieved by using a piece of 2 km of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) as a gain medium. Figure of eight configuration removes the odd order Stokes signals via a four port circulator. Fifteen Stokes channels are simultaneously generated with a spacing of 0.154 nm that is around 20 GHz, when the Brillouin pump and 980 nm pump powers… Show more

“…The anti-Stokes generation is mainly due to the FWM effect. The number of lines is improved as compared to the previous work [17], which uses a 980 nm pump and operates in the C-band region. It is observed that all the odd-order Stokes signals (that have a small peak between desired channels) also appear at the output spectrum.…”

“…It consists of a double Brillouin frequency shifter (DBFS) and a ring EDF laser cavity. The DBFS is the principal structure of this BEFL, which consists of a spool of 2 km long HNLF and four-port optical circulator to provide frequency down shift of 0.16 nm depending on the material texture of the optical fiber [17]. Tunable Brillouin pump (BP) power is supplied by tunable laser source (TLS) with a maximum output power of 8 dBm ($6 mW), which is pumped into the ring cavity by using a four-port directional coupler (DC), with coupling ratio of 80:20.…”

“…Optical fibre lasers with a figure-of-eight configuration have been reported for multi-wavelength emission using both erbium-doped fibre [3] and erbium-ytterbium co-doped fibre [4][5][6] as the gain medium. The inclusion of an optical filter in the loop can be decisive in achieving good output stability [7].…”

“…However, channel spacing of 0.08 nm is not practical for DWDM applications, as it is difficult to demultiplex the channels at the receiver end. Therefore, many works on multi-wavelength BFLs with double Brillouin spacing (DBS) of around 0.16 nm have also been reported [16]. In this paper, a Q-switched multi-wavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser (BEFL) is demonstrated, based on SWCNTbased SA.…”
