This paper proposes a short-term frequency-response scheme of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine generator (WTG) for improving rotor speed recovery and frequency nadir. In the energy-releasing period, to improve the frequency nadir and rotor speed convergence by releasing a large amount of kinetic energy stored in the rotating masses in a DFIG-based WTG, the power reference is increased up to the torque limit referred to the power and reduces along with it for a predefined period which is determined based on the occurrence time of the frequency nadir in a power grid. Then, the reference decreases so that the rotor speed is forced to be converged to the preset value in the stable operating region of the rotor speed. In the energy-absorbing period, to quickly recover the rotor speed, the reference smoothly decreases with the rotor speed and time during a predefined period until it intersects with the maximum power point tracking curve. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme successfully achieves rapid frequency stabilization with the improved frequency nadir under various wind conditions based on the IEEE 14-bus system.

Summary To arrest the frequency nadir for a frequency event, the rapid release of kinetic energy stored in a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)–based wind farm during the initial stage of an event is needed; however, a significant output reduction of a DFIG prior to the frequency nadir can cause a late but significant frequency decline. This paper proposes a stable stepwise short‐term frequency‐support scheme of a DFIG‐based wind farm that is capable of improving the frequency nadir while quickly recovering the rotor speed. Upon detecting a frequency event, the power reference in the proposed scheme is increased by adding constant power to the reference prior to an event and maintaining it for a preset period determined in association with the frequency nadir. The reference then linearly decreases with the rotor speed to converge the rotor speed to a preset value. To quickly recover the rotor speed, at the preset rotor speed, the reference decreases with the rotor speed and time until it intersects with the reference for maximum power point–tracking control. Simulation results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme can improve the frequency nadir while promptly recovering the rotor speed under the various wind conditions.

Novel insight on temporary frequency support of variable speed wind energy conversion system

In the recent decade, temporary frequency support derived from variable speed wind turbine generator has been drawing increasing attention in the electronic‐growing power system. Frequency nadir and rate of change of frequency are two key indicators temporary frequency support strives to improve. This paper proposes a novel insight on frequency regulation of wind power. Note that considerable part of load is shared by synchronous generators and wind turbine generator and the system frequency still will be dominated by the former for a period of time. Simultaneously taking the frequency regulation characteristic of synchronous and power balance into account, a novel frequency regulation scheme aiming at improving system's frequency regulation performance is proposed and tested in a 7‐machine power system with an aggregated wind farm on MATLAB/Simulink to investigate what inherently determines the performance of frequency regulation. Results show that with differential cooperation of synchronous generator and doubly fed induction generator, frequency nadir and rate of change of frequency can be partially improved. Particularly, regarding to handling the issue of control delay, an appropriately slower action upon detecting a frequency event may not screw up it but contribute to a higher frequency nadir, which benefits from the spontaneous cooperation of synchronous generator and wind power with constraint of power balance.
