Stabilization of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite in biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics by adding alginate to enhance their biological performances

Abstract: It is of significance to further improve the bioactivity of existing calcium phosphate (Ca–P) biomaterials to satisfy the needs of regenerative medicine.

“…As Fig. 11, bone-like apatite deposits [58,59] cover the entire surface of the HT coatings and new morphology of deposited particles is found, called sponge-like HA [60]. This extreme increase in bioactivity maybe is related to the plate size decreasing and the appearance of needle-like morphology that prepares more effective contact surface with SBF.…”

“…Due to the addition of alginate calcium, the grain size of BCP-SA (360.86 ± 208.44 nm) was significantly smaller than that of BCP, which was consistent with our previous work. 20 The grain sizes of BCP-1%CaO, BCP-2%CaO, BCP-3%CaO, and BCP-4%CaO were decreased with the increase of CaO content. BCP-1%CaO had the largest grain size of 631.08 ± 163.95 nm among the four BCP-CaO samples.…”

“…Consistent with our previous work. 20 the HA phase was increased to 84.7% in BCP-SA with the addition of alginate calcium, and the lattice parameters (ie, a/b-axis, c-axis and cell volume) of HA phase and β-TCP phase in BCP-SA were higher than those in BCP, while the crystal size of in BCP-SA was smaller than the one in BCP. In BCP ceramics with CaO addition, HA phase increased with the increase of CaO content, as the HA phase contents in BCP-1%CaO, BCP-2%CaO, BCP-3%CaO, and BCP-4%CaO were 45.5%, 59.6%, 92.6%, and 95.1%, respectively.…”
