A previous study (Keltikangas-Jarvinen and Raikkonen, 1990a) discovered two diflerent Type A competitors among adolescents, i.e. adjusted and maladjusted competitors. This paper examines whether the same result can be replicated in older age groups. Type A behaviour, self-esteem, locus of control, and achievement striving were measured in 935 randomly selected young adults. Two dizerent kinds of Type A competitor were found, i.e. aggressive and hard-driving. Neither of these two could be called 'adjusted'. Instead, adjusted and maladjusted forms of striving for achievement were found which adequately described the previously found adjusted and maladjusted types of competitors. The results suggest that achievement striving is a very essential dimension of Type A behaviour. However, it may play a diflerent role in diflerent psychological contexts.L. Keltikangas-Jarvinen and K. Raikkonen dimensional concept. Recent research suggests that probably only some dimensions are pathogenic (Dembroski and Costa, 1987;Matthews, 1982).Our previous findings suggested that in adolescents Type A behaviour is divided into two different factors, both measuring competitiveness and making an equal contribution to the global score. The first was Impatience-Aggression. It consisted of aggressiveness, competitiveness, and impatience; and was related to a low level of self-esteem; an external locus of control, i.e. the belief that one's life is controlled by chance or powerful others; perseverance; and, in spite of high competitiveness, to a low level of self-set goals. The other factor was called LeadershipSense of Responsibility. This factor coincided with a tendency to be elected as a leader by participants, a sense of responsibility, social activity, and competitiveness. Leadershipsense of Responsibility was associated with high self-esteem; an internal locus of control, i.e. the feeling that one's life is regulated by one's own decisions; and high self-set achievement goals (Keltikangas-Jarvinen and Raikkonen, 1990a).The results of a second study showed that Impatience-Aggression was related to a high level of somatic CHD risk factors while Leadershipsense of Responsibility was consistently associated with a low risk (Keltikangas-Jarvinen and Raikkonen, 1989).The purpose of this study was to examine whether the different kinds of Type A competitors, i.e. social competitors with high self-esteem and aggressive competitors with low self-esteem, could be identified in older age groups, i.e. in young adults.
METHOD
SubjectsThe subjects were 935 randomly selected, healthy Finnish young adults participating in the Finnish Multicenter Study on Atherosclerosis Precursors (Akerblom et al., 1985). Whereas the adolescents in the 12-and 15-year-old cohorts of the Multicenter Study were used in our previous examination (Keltikangas-Jarvinen and Raikkonen, 1989Raikkonen, , 1990a, the present sample consisted of three subgroups: the 18-, 21-and 24year-old cohorts from the same study. The numbers of subjects in the subgroups are given in Table 1. T...
