Stability of Railway Embankment in Saturated and Unsaturated Conditions

Abstract: Slope failure is a vital issue in civil engineering infrastructures. Besides, climate change implications made this problem more critical. Therefore, in this study, a railway embankment’s slope stability has been studied in saturated and unsaturated conditions. The soil sample was collected from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru. The necessary and required data obtained through lab experiments. The obtained data from lab experiments then used in Seep/W and Slope/W to model the railway embankment numer… Show more

“…Despite their widespread availability in large quantities, laterites have emerged as one of the most dependable materials utilized in civil engineering projects such as fills or paving materials. However, the laterite soil used for infrastructures such as railways and roads construction material may not be stable, particularly under severe rainfall conditions [15]. Subgrade is part of the road system in which is considered as infrastructure IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1755-1315/1238/1/012017 2 in civil engineering.…”

“…Since the transportation infrastructure bed is subjected to wetting-drying or freezing-thawing Roshan et cycles, stabilising lateritic soil is of great importance and needs to be selected wisely. For instance, it was found that the stability of railway embankments constructed with lateritic soil decreases under rainfall infiltration [4]. Furthermore, the failure of a road built on lateritic soil because of heavy rainfall has been reported in many countries [2,5].…”

“…The study results by [17] disclosed that the formation of lateritic soil is affected by parent rocks' chemical, mineralogical composition, and physical properties. The lateritic soils have been studied for their potential use in liners [18][19][20], highway construction [21], railway embankment [22] and building material [9]. Lateritic soil is widely used for road and railway construction; however, some road and railway deteriorations constructed over these kinds of soils are reported.…”
