Stability of Normative Data for the SF-36

Abstract: Background:The SF-36 is widely used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL), but with few longitudinal studies in healthy populations, it is difficult to quantify its natural history. This is important because any measure of change following an intervention may be confounded by natural changes in HRQOL. This paper assesses mean changes in SF-36 scores over a 3-year period in men and women between the ages of 40 and 59 years at baseline. Methods: Subjects were randomly selected from nine Canadian citie… Show more

“…Second, we observed large intra‐ and interindividual variation in the SF‐36 scores, which makes statistical comparisons difficult. This was also observed in the longitudinal study of Hopman et al (2004) in middle‐aged (40–59 years) adults.…”

“…This test has been previously validated as a measure of recovery after colorectal surgery, and a change of at least 20 m is considered clinically meaningful in this patient population . The effect of the intervention on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) targeted between-group differences in generic health status (36-Item Short Form Survey), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and self-reported energy expenditure (Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors questionnaire) …”

“…With more than 500 000 survivors of childhood cancer in US alone, this finding translates to a substantial number of survivors who are currently living with suboptimal HRQOL decades after their cancer diagnosis and treatment. The proportion of survivors demonstrating a decline from optimal to suboptimal HRQOL differs from that reported among healthy individuals …”
