Stability of long transversely-isotropic elastic cylindrical shells under bending

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe present paper investigates buckling of cylindrical shells of transversely-isotropic elastic material subjected to bending, considering the nonlinear prebuckling ovalized configuration. A large-strain hypoelastic model is developed to simulate the anisotropic material behavior. The model is incorporated in a finite-element formulation that uses a special-purpose ''tube element". For comparison purposes, a hyperelastic model is also employed. Using an eigenvalue analysis, bifurcation on the pr… Show more

“…More recently, Karamanos and Houliara [31,44,45] studied the elastic bifurcation buckling behaviour of long thinwalled tubes under bending (R/t > 100 and 'infinite' L/R) using a similar 'tube element' formulation. Though successful, the numerical formulations presented in these publications are highly specialised and effectively beyond the reach of practising engineers and most researchers, who generally rely on commercially available finite element software.…”

“…For large D/t-ratios short wavelength rippling will occur during bending (both for elastic [17] and inelastic cylinders [22]). At increasing bending angles the tube will locally collapse and a number of "diamond" shapes will be formed.…”

“…In contrast, Shelltype finite elements can capture local effects. The buckling response for long pipes under combinations of bending, axial force, and external pressure using shell analyses were investigated in [3][4][5]. On the other hand shell elements are computationally more expensive and time consuming, and for typical pipeline networks spanning hundreds of meters, such shell analyses become impractical.…”
