Stability of distress and health-related quality of life as well as relation to neuroticism, coping and TNM stage in head and neck cancer patients during follow-up

Abstract: The GHQ scores were stable, whereas the HRQoL sum scores declined slightly (p < 0.001). The GHQ and the HRQoL scores were predicted by neuroticism, avoidant coping pattern, T stage and smoking history, but primarily H&N-specific HRQoL was predicted by treatment-derived factors.

“…When analysed by primary tumour size divided into three groups, it was found that patients with the largest tumour size had lower HRQoL. This is in accordance with previous results concerning other cancer patient groups [14]. Somewhat unexpected was the finding that the presence or absence of distant metastasis was not associated with HRQoL scores.…”

“…Indeed, Watson and Pennebaker stated that ''individuals high in neuroticism are more likely to over-report physical symptoms and to experience negative emotions in response to difficult circumstances and consequently report a lower QoL.'' 46 Several studies that performed objective health assessments demonstrated associations between self-rated QoL and not only objective assessment measures, but also personality in patients with head and neck cancer 11,47 and colorectal disease. 10 However, until now there has been no evidence of an association among objective oral function, personality traits, and QoL.…”

“…HRQoL has become an increasingly studied topic [26] and relate to various aspects of diseases like outcome [27,28], but also to survival [29,30]. As such, it is interesting to note that the voice-related cancer patients in fact, scores with the least pathological value of the various disease groups.…”
