Mixed-oxide coated Ti 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2-C composite supported 20 wt.% Pt electrocatalysts with Ti 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2 /C= 75/25 mass ratio were developed for CO tolerance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anode. Studies of the structure, composition and stability, as well as the results of CO ads stripping confirmed that the mixed oxide composite support and the electrocatalyst prepared for this study show the well-documented characteristics of the Pt/Ti 1x Mo x O 2-C systems and Pt/Ti 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2-C catalyst with enhanced CO tolerance compared to the Pt/C catalyst is suitable for further investigation as an anode in reformate-fed PEMFCs. Dilution of hydrogen with CO 2 and CH 4 had negligible negative impact on the fuel cell performance. Switching gas composition between hydrogen and reformate shows recovery of potential after CO poisoning. Nevertheless, anode catalyst loading of 0.25 and 0.5 mgPt/cm 2 was not enough to give reasonable performance when CO impurity was present. Loading of 0.85 mgPt/cm 2 Ti 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2-C supported catalyst was effective to give 1000 mA/cm 2 current density at 0.6 V under 25 ppm CO and 30 psig. Higher loading was needed at mass transfer limited region to overcome poisoning. However, loadings higher than 0.85 mgPt/cm 2 caused mass transfer limitations. Hence higher loadings is proposed with 40 wt.% Pt/Ti 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2-C support catalyst.

Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation is crucial in fuel cell anodes. Recent research has focused on electrocatalysts that synergistically enhance CO oxidation alongside alcohol/hydrogen oxidation. High sensitivity and selectivity for CO oxidation at lower onset potentials are the key objectives. Molybdenum (Mo) has emerged as a promising non‐noble transition metal co‐catalyst for CO oxidation. Mo versatility arises from its ability to alloy with Pt and mix with other non‐noble transition metals in various forms (MoOx, MoS2, MoC). Carbon‐supported Mo nanoparticles have shown potential in reducing Pt loading and improving CO tolerance due to Mo oxyphilic properties, effectively oxidizing weakly adsorbed CO and lowering onset and peak potentials. However, challenges persist, such as a limited potential window for CO oxidation and decreased CO adsorption affinity at higher potentials. Addressing these issues requires understanding factors affecting Mo‐based electrocatalysts (Mo‐ECs) activity, including PtMo alloy composition, Mo's chemical state, cell temperature, and the role of carbon support. This article provides a comprehensive review of Mo‐ECs role in CO electrooxidation in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) over the past two decades.

Ti(1-x)MoxO2-carbon composites are promising new supports for Pt-based electrocatalysts in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells offering exciting catalytic properties and enhanced stability against electrocorrosion. Pt and the mixed oxide form a couple liable for strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) phenomenon, generally manifesting itself in decoration of the metal particles by ultrathin layers of the support material upon annealing under reductive conditions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the SMSI phenomenon as a potential strategy for tailoring the properties of the electrocatalyst. A 20 wt% Pt/50 wt% Ti0.8Mo0.2O2-50 wt% C electrocatalyst prepared on Black Pearls 2000 carbon functionalized with HNO3 and glucose was reduced at 250 °C in H2 in order to induce SMSI. The electrocatalytic properties and the stability of the reduced and the original catalysts were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and COads stripping voltammetry. Structural investigations as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were performed in order to obtain information about the details of the interaction between the oxide and the Pt particles. The electrochemical experiments pointed out a small loss of the electrochemically active surface area of Pt in the reduced catalyst along with enhanced stability with respect to the original one, while structural studies suggested only a minimal decrease of the Pt dispersion. At the same time, hydrogen exposure experiments combined with XPS demonstrated the presence of Mo species directly adsorbed on the Pt surface. Thus, the properties of the reduced catalyst can be traced to decoration of the surface of Pt by Mo-containing species.
