Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) is one of the most widely used polymers for numerous biomedical, pharmaceutical, personal care, and industrial applications. This chapter begins with an introduction to the solution properties of PVP as manifested in a number of different important parameters to describe the physicochemical properties of the polymer in aqueous solutions. One of the key features of PVP is its good solubility in both water and organic solvents. The complexation of PVP with polyphenols is the basis for a variety of applications. The generation of binding isotherms provides insight into the interactions between polymers and cosolutes. There is an increasing interest in interpolymer complexes or polymer‐polymer complexes formed by mixing two or more interacting polymers in solution, since they are used to generate multilayered soft nanomaterials, such as self‐assembled films or nanoparticles. There has been significant interest in subcritical and supercritical fluid technology as substitutes for organic solvents.

Stability constant and thermodynamic parameters (e.g. A P , ASo) have been determined for interpolymer complexes of several acrylic copolymers and poly(ethylene oxide) in aqueous medium and water-DMF mixtures. It has been observed that stability constant and thermodynamic parameters of the interpolymer complexes change with the composition of the medium. Some of these observations have been attributed to the change in the degree of solvation of component polymers, reduced hydrophobic interaction and dielectric constant of the medium. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG :Stabilitiitskonstante und thermodynamische Parameter (z. B. A P , A g ) von interpolymeren Komplexen einiger Acrylcopolymerer mit Polyethylenoxid wurden in wMriger Ldsung und in Wasser-DMF-Mischungen bestimmt. Es wurde beobachtet, da8Stabilitiit und thermodynamische Parameter der Interpolymerkomplexe sich mit der Zusammensetzung des Mediums iindern. Stability constants and thermodynamic parameters (e. g. AH " and AS ") have been determined for intermacromolecular complexes of poly(methacry1ic acid) and poly-(acrylamide) (PAm)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) graft copolymer. These values have been compared with those obtained for the intermacromolecular complexes of corresponding homopolymers (e. g. PAm and PVA). Influence of grafting on these parameters has been explained on the basis of more favourable cooperative binding with the graft copolymer. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Filr die intermolekularen Komplexe aus Poly(methacry1sBure) und Poly(viny1alkohol-g-acrylamid) wurden die Stabilitiitskonstanten und thermodynamischen Parameter (AH" und ASo) bestimmt. Diese Werte wurden mit denen verglichen, die man vorher filr die intermolekularen Komplexe der entsprechenden Homopolymeren, Poly(acry1amid) und Poly(vinylalcohol), bestimmt hatte.
