Stability analysis of rock slopes with a modified Hoek–Brown failure criterion

Abstract: SUMMARYThe original Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion was used to analyse the stability of rock slopes. For highly fractured rock, the original HB failure criterion has been modified, but its effect on the stability of rock slopes has not been studied. Within the framework of the kinematical approach of limit analysis, this paper computes the rigorous upper bounds of stability factors of homogeneous rock slopes with the modified HB failure criterion under the plane strain condition, by employing a 'generalized… Show more

“…Many researchers have focused on problems of the stability of rock slopes even in the recent past (Nawari et al 1997;Yang et al 2004;Jimenez-Rodriguez et al 2006;Yang and Zou 2006;Low 2007;Li et al 2008). The problems of rock slope stability analysis have also been discussed in many books related to rock engineering (Hoek and Bray 1981;Goodman 1989;Wyllie and Mah 2004;Hoek 2007).…”

“…At the same period, Drescher and Christopoulos [19] proposed a similar technique for the general nonlinear criterion proposed by Zhang and Chen [15]. Yang et al [20,21] extended the work of Collins et al [18] to the case of materials obeying the Hoek-Brown criterion and proposed the "generalized tangential technique". In their work, the stability factor is calculated from the critical height obtained using the upper bound limit analysis N  = γ. H  (s . .…”

“…The Hoek-Brown (HB) strength criterion [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] is one of the most commonly used criteria in the area of underground mines and rock tunneling design [8], stability analysis of rock slopes [9], estimation of the bearing capacity of the rocks [10] and so on. The reasons of its popularity are its feasibility specially developed for intact rock and jointed rock masses, the advantage of less input data derived from the uniaxial compression strength testing, mineralogical examination and characterization of the rock discontinuities, as well as 30 odd years successful application experience in rock engineering.…”
