SrIrIn6 – An Intergrowth of SrIrIn4 with Indium Slabs

Abstract: The indium‐rich intermetallic compound SrIrIn6 was synthesized from the elements in a sealed tantalum ampoule at 1173 K, followed by slow cooling for crystal growth. SrIrIn6 crystallizes with a new structure type which was characterized by X‐ray powder and single crystal diffraction: Pmma, a = 852.34(2), b = 434.54(5), c = 1059.18(6) pm, wR2 = 0.0178, 884 F2 values, and 32 variables. The SrIrIn6 structure shows two basic building units: (i) Ir@In9 tricapped trigonal prisms (261–292 pm Ir–In) and (ii) distorted… Show more

“…In ternary compounds, the distorted bct In@In 8 units need to adjust to the substructures formed with the rare earth and transition metal atoms. As an example we present the In@In 8 units in elemental indium, [1] CaPtIn 4 , [7] YbRhIn 5 , [8] Yb 2 IrIn 8 , [9] SrRh 2 In 8 , [10] SrIrIn 6 , [11] Ba 2 Ir 4 In 13 , [12] and Eu 3 Rh 2 In 15 [13] in Figure 1. As is evident from the site symmetries given in that Figure, ratio for each In@In 8 unit.…”

“…An overview of structure types with differently connected square pyramids was given recently when discussing the new stannides RE 2 Au 3 Sn 6 which contain Au@Sn 5 units. [33] It is interesting to note, that the binary stannides PdSn 2 , PdSn 3 and PdSn 4 [34] 3); however, we need to consider that PrPd 2 Sn 3 is not known.…”

[33] It is interesting to note, that the binary stannides PdSn 2 , PdSn 3 and PdSn 4 [34] all contain Pd@Sn 8 square antiprisms as central building units with 278-284 pm PdÀ Sn. The slightly longer PdÀ Sn distances are a consequence of the larger coordination number.…”

“…No isotypic strontium analogs have been reported. Instead, phase analytical studies revealed the indium‐rich phase SrIrIn 6 [ 25 ] with its own structure type. Our ongoing phase analytical studies in the indium‐rich parts of the Eu‐ T ‐In ( T = Co, Rh, Ir) phase diagrams now revealed the missing link Eu 3 Rh 2 In 15 , whose structure, magnetic properties and 151 Eu Mössbauer spectra are reported herein.…”
