Sr5[NbN4]N - A Nitridoniobate(V) Nitride Containing Isolated [NbN4]7- Tetrahedra and Octahedral Chains 1(Sr4Sr2/2N7+)

Abstract: Sr 5 [NbN 4 ]N (transparent, red single crystals) was synthesized by reaction of Sr 2 N with Nb under nitrogen at ambient pressure and 1223 K. The crystal structure was solved and refined in the space group Pbcm (no. 57), Z ϭ 4, with lattice constants a ϭ 646.6(3) pm, b ϭ 1792.5(9) pm, c ϭ 729.8(4) pm, and R ϭ 0.019, wR 2 ϭ 0.034. The crystal structure contains both isolated tetrahedra [NbN 4 ] 7Ϫ as well as chains of corner sharing octahedra 1 ϱ (Sr 4 Sr 2/2 N 7ϩ ). Strontium is irregularly coordinated by ni… Show more

“…A similar series is found for nitridometalates consisting of N A e 6 octahedra and complex anions: e.g. isolated (NBa 6 ) 9+ units and [NiN] chains in metallic Ba 2 (NBa 6 )[NiN] 6 , (NSr 4 Sr 2/2 ) 7+ chains in (NSr 5 )[NbN 4 ], (NCa 6/2 ) 3+ layers in semiconducting (Ca 3 N) 2 [FeN 3 ],, and a framework of edge‐sharing octahedra in insulating Sr 6 (N 7 Sr 33 )[CoN 2 ] 12 , …”

“…A large number of ternary nitrides of the alkaline‐earth metals (EA) with main‐group or transition‐metal elements contain “isolated” nitride ions, which are in an octahedral coordination environment and surrounded only by EA atoms. Condensation of the coordination polyhedra (EA 6 N) through common corners and edges leads to structural patterns of various dimensionalities with different kinds of cavities,1 which contain main‐group and transition‐metal species with various homo‐ or heteronuclear interconnections (e.g., (Sr 6 N)[Ga 5 ],2 (Sr 5 N)[NbN 4 ],3 (Ca 3 N) 2 [FeN 3 ],4 (Ca 4 N)[In 2 ],5 (Ca 3 N)[Au]6). Ternary nitrides with the composition (Ca 7 N 4 )[M x ] (M=Ag, Ga, In, Tl) were first investigated in the late 1990s 7.…”
